Maple Leafs' Max Domi fined $5,000 for elbowing Flyers Garnet Hathaway

Max Domi of Toronto was fined US$5,000 by the NHL for elbowing Garnet Hathaway of the Philadelphia Flyers during Sunday's Maple Leafs' 3-2 overtime victory.

At 5:08 of the third quarter, Domi was given a minor elbowing penalty for the play.

Jake McCabe and Hathaway got into a brawl in the first period that left the Leafs defenseman stunned and unable to come back.

McCabe bore the brunt of the resulting altercation after provoking Hathaway to drop his gloves in protest of him colliding with Leafs goalie Dennis Hildeby. The fight finished with Hathaway landing on top of McCabe, who lost his balance while taking a right to the head and collapsed awkwardly.

When McCabe attempted to stand up but was unsuccessful, teammates and the trainer hurried to his aid. He did not come back, and the team did not provide an instant update on his "upper-body injury."

In the third period, Domi took matters into his own hands by elbowing Hathaway twice in the head at the Flyers' end boards.

The Players' Emergency Assistance Fund receives the fine, which is the highest permitted by the league's collective bargaining agreement.

On Tuesday, the Leafs and Flyers will play again in Philadelphia.
