Toronto Argonauts unveil Indigenous logo

In front of Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Toronto Argonauts have unveiled their new Indigenous logo.

In collaboration with Saugeen First Nation No. 29 artist and visual storyteller Emily Kewageshig, an Anishnaabe, the logo was created for Toronto's helmets for their upcoming game versus Ottawa.

Alongside the boat, the design highlights the significant bond that Indigenous peoples have with water and incorporates four figures that represent Indigenous peoples in the past, present, and future. The logo's seven circles stand for sustainability and honor the custom of considering the needs of the next seven generations while making decisions.

The feather next to the letter "A" is intended to represent the bravery, honor, and strength of all Indigenous peoples. The gradient design alludes to sunrise and sunset, while the orange color signifies "Orange Shirt Day."

“I am proud to partner with the Toronto Argonauts to create a unique logo for the Orange Jersey Game. I come from a small community and when my art and our culture is put on the forefront, it is a celebration for all of us,” said Kewageshig in a statement. “I was able to integrate symbolism within the logo that honours who we are as Indigenous people and that is so special to me. I thank MLSE for giving me the opportunity to share these stories with the team and all of the fans.”

The game on Saturday will also include a live welcome from Chief Claire Sault, Chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit, a pregame rendition of a traditional flag song by Bear Creek's award-winning drummers, and a halftime show featuring Indigenous Pow-wow dancers and the Red Bear Singers, All Nations Jr., and EJ Kwandibens.

The Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre will get all of the Argonauts' 50/50 earnings on September 28. During the pregame warm-up, the players will don orange jerseys, which will later be auctioned off with the proceeds benefiting the same charity.

On Saturday, September 28, the Toronto Argonauts (7-7) and the Montreal Alouettes (11-2-1) will play. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
