Werenski Vetoes Dallas Trade, Chooses to Stay in Columbus

 

The Zach Werenski situation in Columbus got messy fast. Now, at least publicly, it appears to be over.

After Werenski vetoed a trade to Dallas on Tuesday, all parties sat down Wednesday to clear the air. Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell, Werenski, and his agent Judd Moldaver got on the phone, and by the end of it, the defenseman was comfortable returning to the only NHL home he has ever known. According to insider Darren Dreger, a trade is no longer on the radar, at least for now.

Werenski broke his silence with a statement that hit the notes you would expect, calling out the noise while reaffirming his commitment. He said the situation got blown out of proportion, that Columbus has been his home for a decade, and that he wants to be the player who helps get the Blue Jackets back into the playoffs. He said he and Waddell are completely aligned on what comes next.

That kind of language can mean a lot of things. It can mean genuine reconciliation. It can also mean two sides choosing to de-escalate publicly while the tension quietly simmers. What it clearly means right now is that Werenski is not going anywhere. The Dallas veto was a line drawn. The phone call Wednesday was both sides stepping back from it.

Columbus holds the leverage here. Werenski still has term left on his deal, and if Waddell decides to revisit trade conversations down the road, the defenseman's no-trade protection becomes the central variable all over again. For now, both sides seem content to let the smoke clear.
