Sharks Hire Joe Thornton, Thomas Vanek to Bolster Hockey Operations Team

The San Jose Sharks are making waves this offseason with the addition of two notable names to their hockey operations staff for the 2025-26 season — including a franchise legend and newly inducted Hall of Famer.

Joe Thornton, one of the most iconic players in Sharks history, returns to the organization as a player development coach and hockey operations advisor. The man known as "Jumbo Joe" spent 15 of his 25 NHL seasons in San Jose and had his No. 19 jersey retired by the franchise in November 2024.

Thornton, who retired after the 2021-22 season, is one of the most accomplished players in league history — racking up 1,539 points (430 goals, 1,109 assists) in 1,714 regular-season games. He ranks 14th all-time in NHL points, seventh in assists, and sixth in games played. His accolades include the Hart Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, and an Olympic gold medal with Team Canada in 2010. He was officially inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2025.

Joining him in San Jose’s front office is Thomas Vanek, who will serve as a hockey operations advisor. The former NHL sniper, known for his offensive instincts and power-play prowess, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Additionally, the Sharks named Charlie Townsend as their new director of hockey operations, rounding out a revamped and experienced staff ahead of the upcoming season.
