Kraken Re-Sign Kaapo Kakko to Three-Year, $13.6M Deal

The Seattle Kraken have agreed to terms with restricted free agent Kaapo Kakko on a three-year contract worth $13.6 million, the team announced Tuesday. The deal carries an average annual value of $4.525 million and avoids arbitration.

The contract extends through two of Kakko’s unrestricted free agency years.

“Signing Kaapo was one of our top priorities this offseason,” Kraken general manager Jason Botterill said. “He brings size, skill, and high-end playmaking to our lineup. He plays hard and goes to the tough areas. He integrated quickly into our locker room, and we’re excited to have him signed long term.”

Kakko, 24, notched 14 goals and 30 assists in 79 games last season. He was particularly productive after joining Seattle midseason, posting 30 points in 49 games following a December trade from the New York Rangers.

The Kraken acquired Kakko in exchange for defenseman Will Borgen and two draft picks.

Originally selected second overall by the Rangers in the 2019 NHL Draft, Kakko has recorded 161 points in 379 career games.
