The Montreal Canadiens have made a major move on the blue line, reportedly acquiring Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Following the trade, Dobson is expected to sign a massive eight-year contract worth $9.5 million annually, locking him up through the 2032-33 season. The total value of the deal would be $76 million, making Dobson one of the highest-paid defensemen in franchise history.
The 24-year-old Dobson is coming off a breakout 2024-25 campaign in which he recorded:
-
18 goals
-
56 assists
-
74 points in 82 games
-
Averaged over 25 minutes of ice time per game
-
Logged heavy minutes on both the power play and penalty kill
Dobson’s size, skating, and offensive instincts make him a foundational piece for a Canadiens team aiming to accelerate its rebuild and compete in the Eastern Conference.
The Islanders, meanwhile, part ways with their top defenseman after failing to reach an extension agreement internally.
