Just days before the 2025 NHL Draft, the Buffalo Sabres and Utah Mammoth have reportedly agreed in principle to a trade that would send 23-year-old forward JJ Peterka to Utah. However, the deal has hit a temporary snag, according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli.
“Breaking: Sources say #Sabres have agreed in principle to trade forward JJ Peterka to @utahmammoth,” Seravalli posted on X (formerly Twitter) Wednesday night. “BUT there is apparently a contingency holding up the deal. If completed—and still a big if—it would be a big get for #TusksUp, adding another 23-year-old top line forward to the mix.”
While the exact nature of the holdup remains unclear, it’s not uncommon for trade agreements near the draft to be delayed due to medical clearances, cap considerations, or pending draft pick negotiations.
Peterka, one of the Sabres’ brightest young talents, is coming off a breakout season in Buffalo. In 2024-25, he recorded a career-high 68 points, including 27 goals and 41 assists—second on the team behind only Tage Thompson. That followed a steady upward trajectory, with Peterka tallying 32 points in 2022-23 and 50 points the following season.
Originally drafted 34th overall by Buffalo in 2020, Peterka has developed into a reliable top-six winger with strong offensive instincts and explosive skating ability. For a young Utah franchise looking to establish its identity, adding a high-ceiling player like Peterka could be a foundational move.
The Buffalo Sabres are trading forward JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for defenseman Michael Kesselring and winger Josh Doan, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.
No draft picks are involved in the deal, according to Friedman.
