Senators Sign Lassi Thomson to One-Year, Two-Way Deal
The Ottawa Senators have announced the signing of defenseman Lassi Thomson to a one-year, two-way contract for the upcoming season. The deal is worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $300,000 in the AHL.
Thomson, 24, was originally selected 19th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft by the Senators — a pick acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets in the Matt Duchene trade. In a sense, this signing brings a bit of renewed hope to a once-promising trade tree that had largely gone quiet.
After spending the 2024–25 season in Sweden with the Malmö Redhawks of the SHL, Thomson returns to North America with some momentum. He tallied an impressive 17 goals and 29 points in 50 games, showing a notable offensive spark. While his NHL rights remained with Ottawa during his time overseas, the organization now hopes the experience helped reignite the first-round potential they saw back in 2019.
So far, Thomson’s NHL exposure has been limited. He has appeared in just 18 games for the Senators, registering five assists. Early last season, he was briefly claimed off waivers by the Anaheim Ducks, but Ottawa reclaimed him just over a week later.
In the AHL, Thomson has been a steady contributor with the Belleville Senators, posting 24 goals and 93 points over 202 games. The team continues to view him as a capable two-way defender who brings value at both ends of the ice.
His new deal also gives the Senators some roster flexibility and added insurance ahead of training camp, especially as veteran blueliner Nick Jensen recovers from hip surgery performed last month. While the exact details of Jensen’s procedure haven't been disclosed, the team remains hopeful he'll be ready to go when the season starts.
Meanwhile, Nikolas Matinpalo is currently projected to round out the third pairing on the right side. His recent two-year, one-way contract further cements his spot in the defensive rotation.
Thomson's return also complements the arrival of Carter Yakemchuk, the organization’s top defensive prospect who is set to make his transition to the pro ranks. With Thomson in the fold, the Sens can afford to ease Yakemchuk into the lineup and potentially start him in the AHL, allowing him to develop without immediate pressure.
In all, bringing back Lassi Thomson is a low-risk, potentially high-reward move that bolsters Ottawa’s blue line depth and keeps competition alive heading into the 2025–26 campaign.
