In a stunning turn of events, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights have pulled off one of the biggest blockbuster moves in recent NHL memory.
Mitch Marner has signed an eight-year contract extension worth $96 million ($12 million AAV) with the Maple Leafs — a deal orchestrated as part of a sign-and-trade agreement that will send the star winger to Vegas.
The trade is pending a final call with the league office, but once processed, Marner’s rights will be transferred to the Golden Knights, with a significant package expected to return to Toronto in compensation.
Marner, 28, has been a core piece of the Maple Leafs since being drafted fourth overall in 2015. Over the past several seasons, he's consistently produced at a point-per-game pace, earning multiple All-Star appearances and playing a vital role on both the power play and penalty kill.
While Toronto retains none of Marner’s new cap hit, the return package could play a pivotal role in reshaping their roster and direction under GM Brad Treliving. For Vegas, adding a dynamic playmaker like Marner reinforces their win-now mentality and adds another star to their already loaded forward group.
Details of the trade package are expected to emerge shortly following the league’s approval.
