The Philadelphia Flyers have made a major move to inject more offensive talent into their lineup, acquiring skilled forward Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks. In return, Anaheim receives center Ryan Poehling, a 2025 second-round draft pick (via Columbus), and a 2026 fourth-round selection.
Zegras, originally selected ninth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, will now get a fresh start in Philadelphia after an injury-riddled pair of seasons. Despite his recent struggles to stay healthy, the 23-year-old remains one of the league’s most creative young forwards. He recorded 12 goals and 32 points in 57 games last season. Before that, Zegras delivered back-to-back 20-goal, 60-point seasons in 2021–22 and 2022–23, showcasing the elite playmaking that made him a fan favorite in Anaheim.
“I want to thank Trevor for his contributions over the past six years,” Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said in a team statement. “This was a difficult decision, but as we continue to reshape our roster, this trade helps position us better moving forward. We wish Trevor all the best in Philadelphia.”
Heading to Anaheim is Ryan Poehling, a dependable two-way forward who signed with the Flyers as a free agent in 2023 and later agreed to a two-year, $3.8 million extension. The 26-year-old tallied 12 goals and 31 points this past season. Drafted in the first round by Montreal in 2017, Poehling has accumulated 43 goals and 95 points in 283 career NHL games.
This deal marks another notable transaction between the Ducks and Flyers involving high-profile prospects. Earlier in 2024, Philadelphia traded Cutter Gauthier to Anaheim for defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a second-round pick. The second-rounder Philadelphia included in the Zegras deal originally came from Columbus in the Ivan Provorov trade.
With Zegras joining a retooling Flyers team, all eyes will be on how he fits into John Tortorella’s system and whether he can return to his dynamic form. Meanwhile, the Ducks continue to build for the future with added assets and depth.
