Dallas Stars Sign Matt Duchene to Four-Year, $18M Contract Extension

The Dallas Stars have locked in forward Matt Duchene with a four-year, $18 million contract extension, the team announced Wednesday. The deal begins in the 2025–26 season and runs through 2028–29, carrying an average annual value (AAV) of $4.5 million.

“We’re thrilled to keep Matt in Dallas,” said General Manager Jim Nill. “He led our team in scoring last season and continues to be a key presence both on and off the ice. His leadership and seamless fit within our locker room make him an essential piece of our championship ambitions.”

The 34-year-old Duchene had a standout 2024–25 season, registering 82 points (30 goals, 52 assists) in 82 games — matching his highest single-season point total and setting a new career high in assists. His offensive production led the team and marked the second-best scoring season of his 16-year NHL career, trailing only his 86-point campaign in 2018–19.

Among a season filled with personal milestones, Duchene:

  • Played his 1,100th NHL game on Jan. 16 vs. Montreal

  • Notched his 500th career assist on Feb. 4 vs. Los Angeles

  • Hit 100 points as a Dallas Star on Jan. 2 vs. Ottawa

  • Earned NHL’s Third Star of the Week (Oct. 27) after a six-point week (3G, 3A)

  • Added 6 points (1G, 5A) in 18 playoff games, helping the Stars reach their third straight Western Conference Final

Since entering the NHL in 2009–10, Duchene has tallied 891 points (371 goals, 520 assists) in 1,138 career games with five different teams:

  • Colorado Avalanche (2009–18)

  • Ottawa Senators (2017–19)

  • Columbus Blue Jackets (2019)

  • Nashville Predators (2019–23)

  • Dallas Stars (2023–present)

Over his first two seasons in Dallas, Duchene has recorded 147 points (55G, 92A), ranking second on the team during that span. He also became just the ninth player in franchise history to post 60+ points in each of his first two seasons with the team.

Duchene has been among the NHL's elite for over a decade — currently ranking 14th in goals and 17th in points among active players since his debut. He was also named an NHL All-Star in both 2011 and 2016, and was a Calder Trophy finalist in 2010, leading all rookies in scoring.

Born in Haliburton, Ontario, Duchene has a decorated international resume representing Team Canada:

  • Gold Medalist at the 2014 Winter Olympics

  • Champion at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey

  • Three-time World Champion (2015–17)

  • Competed in six IIHF World Championships (2010–2017)

He was originally drafted third overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2009 NHL Draft, and joined the Stars as a free agent signing on July 1, 2023.
