Chicago Blackhawks Exploring Possibility of Trading 3rd Overall Pick

Chicago Blackhawks Reportedly Open to Trading No. 3 Pick in 2025 NHL Draft

The Chicago Blackhawks are reportedly open to moving the third overall selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, according to insider Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. With one of the deepest prospect pools in the league, Chicago appears willing to leverage its draft capital for more immediate roster upgrades.

“Chicago is open to being aggressive with the No. 3 pick if the right deal comes along,” Seravalli noted.

This approach signals a possible shift in strategy from a long-term rebuild to a more balanced approach — accelerating their return to playoff contention by bringing in NHL-ready talent.

Blackhawks' Draft Stockpile Is Among NHL’s Best

Over the past three drafts, the Blackhawks have selected eight players in the first round, including top prospects like Connor Bedard, Kevin Korchinski, and Oliver Moore. Their development pipeline is stacked with high-end talent across all positions.

Recent First-Round Picks by Chicago:

YearPickPlayerPosition
20242Artyom LevshunovD
202418Sacha BoisvertC
202427Marek VanackerLW
20231Connor BedardC
202319Oliver MooreC
20227Kevin KorchinskiD
202213Frank NazarC
202225Sam RinzelD

In addition to holding the No. 3 pick, Chicago also owns the 25th overall selection in the 2025 Draft, acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2023 Jake McCabe trade. Looking ahead to 2026, they hold two first-round picks, including one from the Florida Panthers as part of the Seth Jones trade.

The Blackhawks finished the 2024–25 season with a 25-46-11 record, second-worst in the NHL — ahead of only the San Jose Sharks. While the team continues to develop a promising core, there’s a clear need for impact players who can support Connor Bedard and push the team toward competitiveness.

Should the Blackhawks keep the No. 3 pick, top prospects such as Anton Frondell, Caleb Desnoyers, and Porter Martone are among the names to watch. However, if the right trade offer arises, Chicago may prefer to flip the pick for an established player who can contribute immediately.

Chicago’s willingness to move such a high pick adds significant intrigue to the top of the 2025 NHL Draft. With Macklin Celebrini expected to go first overall, the No. 3 spot could be a prime trade target for other teams looking to land a future star — especially if they believe they can draft a potential franchise cornerstone.

Whether the Blackhawks ultimately keep or trade the pick, their actions will shape not only their own future but potentially the entire draft landscape.
