Auston Matthews Heads to Germany for Treatment? Kamp on the IR
TUE NOV 19TH: Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews is currently in Munich, Germany, for treatment with a trusted doctor he has worked with in the past. He is accompanied by a team physician, with the visit described by leafs GM Brad Treliving as more of a “general check-up” and an opportunity to get additional work done on his upper-body injury.
Treliving emphasized that there have been no setbacks in Matthews’ recovery and progress has been positive since his last game on November 3rd. While a return this weekend is possible, Matthews is more likely to rejoin the team during their upcoming road trip to Florida, which includes games against the Panthers on November 27th and the Lightning on November 30th.
Despite Matthews’ absence over the last six games, the Leafs have excelled, posting a 5-1 record. The team has been led offensively by Mitch Marner, who has stepped up with 10 points (4 goals 6 assists) in that span, delivering much needed scoring and offence while Matthews remains sidelined. William Nylander and John Tavares have also been instrumental, each contributing 6 points in these six games.
One of the biggest improvements has come on the power-play, an area that struggled earlier in the season. Without Matthews, the Leafs have gone 8-for-23 (34.8%) on the man advantage over the last six games, showcasing a newfound gear.
In other roster news, the Leafs have placed forward David Kampf on the injured reserve list with a lower-body injury. To fill the gap, they recalled Fraser Minten from the Toronto Marlies (AHL). Minten’s addition will provide the Leafs will some needed depth as they navigate several injuries to their forward positions.
Toronto has done a great job thus far without their captain Matthews, however, his eventual return will be a welcome boost for the Leafs as they push to take top spot in the Atlantic division.
