Leafs Deal Liljegren to Sharks
Wed Oct 30th, 2024: The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Timothy Liljegren to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for veteran blueliner Matt Benning, a third-round pick (2025) and a sixth-round pick (2026).
Liljegren, who was drafted 17th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, has seen limited game action this season so far, only appearing in one game. Despite his potential, he found himself sidelined due to the team’s depth on the blue line, which has made it difficult for him to crack the lineup. The Leafs have been looking to move on from Liljegren this year, and this trade accomplishes just that, while also allowing him to seek more ice time in San Jose.
Last season Liljegren had 3 goals and 20 assists for 23 points over 55 games. He averaged around 18 minutes of ice per night but was often overshadowed by other top defencemem.
Benning who was born in St. Albert, AB helps the Leafs gain a reliable depth piece on defence. The 29-year old has been known for his physical style of play and ability to contribute on the penalty kill. He is currently under contract for the next 4 years at an AVV of $1,25 million.
The trade gives the Leafs some more flexibility in terms of cap room, while also giving Liljegren the chance he deserves to prove himself with more consistent ice time.
