Finland's First Openly Gay Hockey Player Janne Puhakka Murdered, Partner Confesses To Killing
Local authorities think that Janne Puhakka, the nation's first openly homosexual hockey player, was murdered and killed by his estranged husband a few weeks after they ended their relationship.
Puhakka's age was 29.
The Police of Finland made a statement on Tuesday night in which they stated they had been looking into the murder of a 29-year-old that happened on October 13, the day Puhakka was killed. They did not identify the victim or the suspect. The announcement said that "the suspect has told that he shot the victim with a shotgun and caused the victim's death" and that "police have now questioned the man suspected of committing a homicide in Espoo's Henttaa on October 13th."
“It was revealed in the interrogation that the motive for the crime was the ending of the relationship between the victim and the suspect,” the Police of Finland statement continued.
The Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yleisradio Oy (YLE), reported over the weekend that Puhakka’s estranged 66-year-old husband Rolf Nordmo is the suspect. Police said in a previous statement that authorities arrested a man of that age at the scene of the crime, who they believed to be responsible for Puhakka’s murder.
The report states that Puhakka's friend called law enforcement after being unable to get in touch with him and then arrived at the spot.
Police claimed Nordmo had a permit to use the gun, but they wouldn't say how many bullets were fired.
