Vegas locks up Noah Nanifin to long term deal

The Vegas Golden Knights announced on Thursday that they had signed defenseman Noah Hanifin to a new eight-year contract.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the agreement is valued at $7.35 million AAV, or a total of $58.8 million.

Hanifin was nearing the end of a $29.7 million, six-year contract ($4.95 million AAV).

In a three-team transaction that sent defenseman Daniil Miromanov to the Calgary Flames along with a conditional 2025 first-round pick and conditional 2025 third-round pick, the 27-year-old was transferred to Vegas on March 6, one day before the deadline of March 8. Vegas also sent the Philadelphia Flyers a fifth-round pick in 2024 in exchange for keeping 25% of his cap hit this year.

The defenseman has averaged 23:02 minutes of ice time while recording two goals and seven assists in 16 games since being traded to the Golden Knights. He has played in 77 games this season and has 13 goals and 31 assists for a total of 44 points.

The Boston native started his NHL career with the Carolina Hurricanes and has played for nine seasons. In his fourth season, he and Elias Lindholm were sent to Calgary in a blockbuster trade that sent Dougie Hamilton, Adam Fox, and Michael Ferland to the Hurricanes.

Over his 675 NHL games, he has 221 assists and 62 goals.

The Vegas Golden Knights are currently 42-28-8, good for fourth in the Pacific Division. They're currently holding onto the second wild card spot in the Western Conference and have a three-point lead over the St. Louis Blues with four games remaining.
